Separate storage, redundancy and backup
Network-attached storage became especially interesting as home networks improved and households accumulated larger media and document collections. A good NAS review should examine more than transfer speed. Setup quality, drive support, noise, power use, network interfaces, account management and recovery options all influence whether the device is suitable for continuous use. Redundant disks can protect against a drive failure, but they do not replace an independent backup of important data.
For a practical plan, divide data into active files, replaceable media and irreplaceable personal or work data. That makes it easier to choose where speed matters, where capacity matters, and where an additional backup copy should live.
